The Philly Diaries – Day 01 – Kicking Off A Transformational Journey Of Fulfilled Dreams And Personal Growth

It’s a dream that comes true! A dream that I had for quite a long time! And I am finally about to turn it into reality. A transformational journey of fulfilled dreams and personal growth.

But let me start from the very beginning. It began in 2014 with my first solo trip to New Orleans, Louisiana! On the first day of my stay in New Orleans, I met that guy from Philadelphia. He was there with his friends for the weekend. And without going into too many details, he was the reason why I came to Philly for the first time! It was Christmas time, and we chatted for about nine months when I told him I would love to do a Christmas tour on the East Coast. He suggested visiting Philadelphia, too, and that I could stay with him for the time I’m there. So, practical me, I said: “Yeah! I Would love to!” the deal was agreed upon!

I was excited not only because of the free accommodation but also to find out if this vacation flirt-continuously-chat relationship-jawn had any future! Fast-forward…, it turned out pretty fast that we wouldn’t have a future! Sad! I know!

But what stayed in Philly was my heart—not the broken part related to this flirt episode, but a severe fall in love with the city itself! My heart stayed here! So, a few months later, I returned for a weekend as a kick-off destination for my next solo trip. And even that wasn’t enough!

A Long Dreamt Dream Comes True

As I traveled to different countries, cultures, and continents, it became more evident and apparent to me that I was made for traveling, even nomading, rather than staying in one place all the time! So, one dream formed itself over the years and became more and more specific. First, it was about living abroad. Then it should be for at least three months. And eventually, I wanted to live in Philadelphia! So, I often thought about living elsewhere, but especially in my early twenties, I was too afraid to even think about living in another country alone! But traveling helped me get accustomed to the idea of actually living abroad! And even more, it ignited a craving for that experience. Living abroad for several months in Philadelphia was that dream!

And now, it comes true! Well, at least for one month! I agreed to this compromise with myself and my boss, as long as I’m still at a regular job. But hey, I’d rather have one month than not at all, right?

So, here I am! Boarding the plane to Philly and experiencing the city from another side rather than sightseeing only.

Arriving In Philadelphia

After a long flight with a short stop in Dublin, I landed in Philadelphia. The flight and airport experience was lovely, with almost no trouble and no queues at customs or elsewhere. I think one of the flights was a bit delayed, but I couldn’t get my head around the different times. Most important, I made it to Philly.

I took a taxi to my apartment, located at the famous Divine Lorraine Hotel on N Broad St., a super sweet one-bedroom apartment with a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, washing machine, and what else you need to live in a place for several weeks. Although tempting, I don’t want to eat out daily while I’m here.

The first thing I did after checking in was do some grocery shopping and fill up my fridge. Just next door, very convenient, is a supermarket. I did my shopping, cooked some dinner, and relaxed on the couch just as I would when I came home after a long absence!

Living here is pretty cool already!

What´s Next On That Transformational Journey?

The first day is over now! I didn´t do much on that first evening except be happy that I was here, watch the view, and wonder about this cute apartment.

There are no big plans! I wouldn´t have any either if I were at home; therefore, when I intend to experience living elsewhere, it wouldn´t make sense to plan out my days and not have time to live actually.

Just be! Go with the flow and see what I´m up to every day. Whether going out there or staying inside and being a couch potato! Just as I would do at home because this is my home for the next four weeks. I can promise you that it has many emotional and transformational challenges in store for me!

But this is what I signed up for! A transformational journey of fulfilled dreams and personal growth!
