When people think of Scotland, Edinburgh often steals the spotlight. But for me, it was Glasgow that captured my heart. This vibrant city is full of contrasts! Historic charm meets modern cool, gothic architecture meets colorful street art, and warm locals meet travelers from all over the world. If you’re planning a trip to Scotland, don’t make the mistake of skipping Glasgow. Here’s why I love it so much, along with a travel guide and my favorite things to do during my visit.

Why Glasgow?

Glasgow is a city that feels alive. It has a gritty edge balanced by an artistic soul, with music venues, museums, and murals around every corner. What I love most is its atmosphere; it feels less touristy than Edinburgh, yet just as rich in history, stories, and culture. The locals are some of the friendliest I’ve ever met, and they’ll happily point you to the best pub, hidden café, or quirky shop. Keep on reading for my Glasgow Travel Guide!

Top Things to Do in Glasgow

Whether traveling solo or with friends, there is something to do either way! I started and ended solo, but coincidentally, friends of mine were traveling through Scotland and were nearby, so we met up on Saturday and spent the day together. Here are my top recommendations for things to do in Glasgow over the weekend.

1. Explore George Square and the City Centre

The beating heart of Glasgow, George Square, is surrounded by grand Victorian architecture and always buzzing with life. From here, you can wander the shopping streets, discover quirky bookshops, or stop for a coffee in one of the many independent cafés. It´s also the meeting point of the two routes of Hop-on Hop-Off Sightseeing buses*, which bring you to all major attractions throughout the city! 

2. Visit Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

This Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a true gem, and the best part? It’s free! You’ll find everything from Renaissance paintings to a giant dinosaur skeleton. The red sandstone building itself is a masterpiece and a perfect photo spot. 

3. Discover Glasgow’s Street Art

One of my favorite ways to see the city is by following the Glasgow Mural Trail. Enormous, colorful works of art brighten the streets, telling the city’s story in a modern and creative way. It feels like an outdoor gallery that changes with every corner you turn.

4. Relax in the West End

If you want a slower pace, head to Glasgow’s West End*, with its leafy streets, vintage shops, and trendy restaurants. Don’t miss Ashton Lane, a cobbled street lined with fairy lights, pubs, and restaurants—it’s one of the most romantic spots in the city.

5. Take a Sightseeing Bus Tour

Whenever I’m in a new city, I love starting with a Hop-on Hop-off bus tour. In Glasgow, it’s the best way to see the highlights, from the River Clyde to Glasgow Cathedral*, without missing anything. 6. Enjoy Glasgow’s Music Scene

Did you know Glasgow is a UNESCO City of Music? From big-name concerts to intimate gigs, there’s always live music happening. If you’re into nightlife, check out King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut—famous for hosting up-and-coming bands before they hit the big time.

7. Enjoy The Food Scene in Glasgow

The food scene in Glasgow showcases a wide spread of international cuisines. From traditional Scottish meals to Italian, Fusion, and other styles! A Mekka for Foodies! Within my three days, I couldn´t try them all, but I found a couple of them that I really loved.

– Old Salty´s, West End. A traditional Italian restaurant in Glasgow´s West End. A perfect stop for lunch or dinner while exploring the area and before or after a visit to Kelvingrove. I loved the food so much!

– The Wilson Street Pantry, Merchant City. What I loved about this one was that it´s open already for breakfast! Which wasn´t the case too often with the other pubs and restaurants around. And the atmosphere, which was really relaxed and perfect for a Sunday Breakfast/ Brunch! 

– The Purrple Cat Café, Merchant City. My absolute favorite! I’ve visited Cat Cafés before in Herne Bay and Budapest, and I loved them, especially since I don´t have a cat myself. Lucky me, I came across the Purrple Cat Café on my last day! Usually, only available for pre-bookings, but sometimes there is room for Walk-Ins! I was lucky that I only needed to wait a couple of minutes and could stay for an hour. When you reserve a table upfront, you can stay longer, of course! For me, it was enough time for a quick lunch and playing and cuddling with any cat that was up to it! So, if you´re into cats, this is the place to be! And therefore, it needs to be in any Glasgow travel guide!
