Where To Go As A Female Solo Traveler
Where once the world felt like an enormous, daunting and expensive challenge for lone travelers, many are now seeing travel as a necessity, a way of rebalancing their souls and finding their real purpose in life.
According to a recent survey, one in nine travelers had gone on a solo trip in the previous 12 months – there was a rise of 200% alone in 2012. Another study by Travelex found a quarter of travelers prefer their own company.
Women, in particular, are grabbing the opportunity. More financially secure and far less likely to settle down with a husband or a partner than women are driving this change in the past. The Facebook page for The Solo Travel Society, for instance, has almost a quarter of a million followers, nearly 65% of them are women. But if you are a woman preparing to set off on your travels, where should you go? Well, here are six cities that are great to visit for women traveling solo.
1. Honolulu, Hawaii (USA)
One of the friendliest places on earth, Hawaii is an exotic, charming, and memorable destination for any traveler. But if you are traveling on your own, it is even better. You’ll find the locals will stop to help you with directions, take the time to have a chat and, perhaps, also teach you to surf. Hawaii has it all for solo female travelers. One of the great joys of going to a new place on your own is that it forces you to make new friends and strike up conversations. It is essential to make an effort to do so, you will learn new things, make new friends, and it may even change the course of your life in ways you can’t yet imagine. Hawaii has that kind of magic to it. You will love every minute of being there.
2. Chiang Mai, Thailand
This northern city in beautiful Thailand is a fantastic and welcoming place for women traveling on their own. Not as large or daunting as Bangkok, easy to navigate, and safe to walk around, Chang Mai still possesses the delightful cultural charms and attractions that make the Land of Smiles such a great country to visit. Before you leave for Thailand, it is worth checking whether you need any immunizations for your trip. And because you are traveling alone, if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, make sure you carry a medical alert bracelet or necklace with you, with your medical details displayed on it.
3. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Perhaps not an obvious choice, but this incredible place is safe, clean, and easy to navigate. In any Arab country, it is essential to respect the local laws, customs, and culture. Still, if you do, you will be welcomed warmly by the locals and be able to explore the great clash between the modern and historical here. The transport system is well priced and easy to use. The restaurants are incredible, and there is so much to see.
4. New York City, New York (USA)
The Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, has a myriad of names, but whatever you want to call it, New York is an ideal place to visit for any woman traveler (although I think it’s a bit too busy, at least for me). It is a city that is busy any time of day. The sidewalks are always bustling, so you will never feel alone, and the world-famous sights will keep you engaged and present plenty of opportunities to meet fellow travelers.
5. Gold Coast, Australia
A fun-loving city in one of the world’s most fun-loving countries, the Gold Coast has something not only for the female solo traveler but for everyone. Incredible surfing, beautiful restaurants, stunning rainforests, and a nightlife that never stops; this is a place where it is impossible to get bored or lonely. If you love the outdoors and enjoy meeting friendly people, this is the place for you. The weather is fantastic, and the people have just as sunny a disposition.
6. Istanbul, Turkey
The crossroads of the world, where east meets west. Istanbul may not be the obvious choice for a woman traveling independently, but modern Turkey is a truly spectacular destination. There is nothing quite like waking up to the morning call to prayer, while the beauty of the stunning Blue Mosque and the sprawling street markets are a joy to behold. Take a boat trip along the beautiful Bosphorus river and then visit the Sophia Hagia, and you will get a sense of why this city is so unique.
